[February 3, 2012] With all the talk of flat to declining page volumes, growth in the wide-format market is forcing the industry to re-examine the definition of a page. New and emerging applications like home décor, signage, and packaging are driving unilateral year-over-year increases in worldwide unit shipments and revenue for all wide-format market segments even as more traditional wide-format markets like construction and engineering continue to struggle.

[February 1, 2012] Quick, what is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the desktop ink jet market? Mobile printing? An alternative to color laser for small- and medium-sized businesses? Professional features in an entry-level package? These are just some of the messages that ink jet vendors used in 2011 to make ink jet printers and MFPs relevant in today’s dynamic small-office/home-office and SMB environments, with the sole purpose of capturing as many printed pages as possible.

[January 30, 2012] Last year, we wrote about the explosive growth of continuous-form ink jet digital presses, and vendors continued to install new machines at a rapid pace in 2011. Although year-over-year unit shipment and revenue growth was half that of last year, the continuous-form ink jet segment continues to be the growth leader for the commercial printing market. [January 27, 2012] In 2011, the color laser MFP market showed healthy unit shipment and revenue growth, although not as robust as in 2010. However, growth in today’s difficult economic climate and relatively flat printing and imaging market is good news, as the color laser MFP market is not immune to the secular trends besieging the entire hard copy industry.

[January 25, 2012] Analyzing the growth trends in the various printing and imaging market segments usually involves looking at the market from a number of different perspectives and combing through data on market trends to see how different factors influenced the subsegments that make up the larger piece of the pie. In the case of the monochrome laser MFP market in 2011, the facts are very black and white: unit shipments are growing, while declining average selling prices (ASPs) are restricting revenue growth. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the performance of the monochrome laser MFP market in 2011 is the worldwide unit shipment growth of Segment 2-4 A3 MFPs.

[January 23, 2012] In 2011, the global color laser printer market was awash in one color: red. For you financial types, I am not talking about red in the sense of negative profitability but rather negative worldwide unit shipment and revenue growth. Companies are now looking to replaced aging devices that are expensive to operate and maintain, but business ink jets and color laser MFPs are the replacement machine of choice, leading to softness in the color laser printer market.
